Our area is notorious for "hard water"—water with high mineral content. While safe to drink, it wreaks havoc on your home's plumbing.
The Limescale Problem
That chalky white crust on your kettle element? That's limescale. Now imagine that inside your boiler, your washing machine, and your pipes. Just 1.6mm of scale buildup can reduce your heating efficiency by up to 12%.
Solution A: Scale Inhibitor (Basic)
This is a simple device we fit to the pipework entering your boiler. It uses magnets or electrolytic action to prevent scale from sticking to pipes.
- Pros: Cheap (£50-£100), no maintenance.
- Cons: Doesn't remove the minerals, just stops them sticking for a while. Effectiveness wears off over distance.
Solution B: Water Softener (Premium)
A machine installed under your sink that actively removes calcium and magnesium using salt blocks.
- Pros: Totally soft water throughout the house. Shinier taps, bubbles in the bath, longer lasting appliances.
- Cons: Expensive (£500+), requires refilling with salt blocks.
Our Recommendation
For protecting your boiler, a Scale Inhibitor is a must-have (and required by Building Regs). For lifestyle benefits (softer skin, cleaner bathrooms), a Water Softener is a luxury upgrade worth considering.
